Da Nang

Da Nang is the beach city most Western travellers pick as a base in central Vietnam, and the first city we cover in depth. It has a long, swimmable city beach with lifeguard towers, an expat cafe block a street back from the sand, cheap seafood halls that sell by the kilo, and a river-side centre where residents actually live, eat and drink. It is also the airport for Hoi An and the gateway to Hue, which is why so many trips start here. Our Da Nang guides are built differently from the usual list. For food and things to do we pull the newest Google Maps reviews for each place and tag them by language: if the recent reviews are still written in Vietnamese by people with dozens of other local reviews, residents are still going; if they have turned Korean, English and Chinese, the tour buses have arrived. For hotels we keep our own database of Da Nang properties, pulled from Agoda and refreshed monthly, and only shortlist places scoring 8.5 or higher from at least 100 reviews, with a sentiment pass over the last twenty for the complaints nobody prints. Every recommendation names its honest catch before its charm: the thin walls, the 8pm pool closing, the two-hour lunchtime queue. Christina Clesca, a YouTube creator based in Da Nang, checks these pages against what she sees on the ground and flags what has changed since a guide was written. Places that close or slip below the bar are removed at the monthly refresh, so the list you are reading is the current one, not a snapshot from three years ago. Start with where locals eat, then the beach guide for where to stay; the themed stay guides for couples, families and remote workers follow.
